Floral Emotions

PHOTOGRAPHY & COLLAGE

Floral Emotions Project

Overview

For my final portfolio project for photography class, we were to create a concept for the piece and create
10 pieces of artworks that are linked together.

These series of photograph serves to explore the emotions portrayed in the picture and letting the floral elements further convey the emotion.

Expressing our Emotions

For my final portfolio in my photography class, I decided to explore more in depth on the emotions conveyed in photographs.

These series of photographs consists a body of work of my brother enwrapped in floral elements.

Beginning this work it was tough to figure out which subject to use as this stems from Project X. I knew I just wanted to explore emotions and let the floral elements further express that emotion.

Interactions of the Body and Flowers

What is interesting about this concept is being able to tie both elements together, the subject and the flowers. It is one of my initial struggles as I was taking into account the subject’s pose.

Doing collages can be quite overwhelming as it features many photos coming together to form a complete photograph. Going forward, I had to think about how I would portray certain emotions and understand how the flowers would further convey
the emotion.

Surrealism

When figuring out my concept and understanding what I wanted to convey with this series, I decided to further explore and research an art movement: Surrealism. Upon getting inspiration from the vast amount of crazy and dreamy artworks, I knew that my piece would have some element of surrealism. With this research, I got a better understanding of how these two elements would work together to formulate a complete image.

Thinking About the Subject

I then decided to think about the kind of poses the subject would be in to convey certain emotions such as anger, happiness and sadness. I would need to be careful on the placement of the subject, especially since I’ll be collaging around the photo. Upon thinking about the photography, I decided to keep the photographs in black and white so then the collage of flowers would stand out and create a contrast between the two. To let the viewers look at the flowers as well as the subject to understand what emotion is being portrayed.

Our Flowery Emotions

This final portfolio for my photography class was definitely a fun experience as it made me delve deep into an art movement I was quite interested in. Being such an imaginative person, I had fun breaking the norms of photography and combine it with collages to make an art piece.

Final Thoughts

During my last year of at Visual and Creative Arts, I had a bit of a flower theme throughout my projects. Growing up, my mom always filled our home with plants and other wildlife as she never feels at home without them. This extends to my projects in the arts. Being able to explore working with floral elements in a collaged form, especially in photography, it was quite a fun process that I would like to do again!
