What is the Meaning of Home?

This project is based on the Meaning of Home National Writing Contest for grades 4, 5, 6 to write a poem or a paragraph on what home means to them. With the winning students, we were to compile the poems/paragraphs into a booklet format. It was an interesting and fun idea to create a book that is reminisces a children’s book.

Creating a Persona

At the beginning stage of creating the book, I thought of the main question the book is about: what is the meaning of home to me? Throughout this book, I want the reader to feel at home and welcomed. I decided to include warm brown colours and welcoming fonts that are elegant and sweet.

As inspiration, I looked at several children’s books and enjoyed each of their illustrations. It felt simple, yet filled with light colours that are pleasing to the eye.

Let’s Draw!

With my initial illustration and choosing a warm colour palette, I went on to create several illustrations for the book.

Through these illustrations, I wanted to tie it in with the overall mood of the booklet: the feeling of home and warmth. I decided to draw little elements around each illustration to show growth and stability within the home. Finally, to tie it altogether, I added a small icon of the home figure throughout each illustration. Think you can find them all?

What Home Means to Me

As I finalized my design layouts for the booklet, I played with each element within each illustration. Playing with the floral elements and see how they create an interesting layout for each page. I also delve deeper into playing with other colours than just staying with warm brown colours and with that exploration, the colours feel more tied together to create the overall theme and mood of home.

Final Thoughts

This project made me think about how to design for print, especially learning how to design in a booklet format. Knowing that some colours may look different when its printed and be cautious about font sizing as well! Overall, it was a great project to work on and really expand my art to create something close to a children’s book!
